Medical Camps

medical camp

Despite an elaborately designed government health care system in India, rural residents of Kanchipuram District are without access to affordable and quality health care. Through Medical Camps, RIDE brings sorely needed preventative medicine to the villages of Kanchipuram District, thus allowing for early detection of illnesses and effective and inexpensive treatment. Doctors perform regular check-ups and make on-the-spot diagnosis of health problems, followed by either treatments or referrals to other medical institutions if treatment is not possible at the camp itself. When available, RIDE also conducts Medical Camps with specialists, including dentists, ophthalmologists and dermatologists. In addition, the Medical Camps provide forum for educating villagers on general health issues including AIDS prevention, hygiene and sanitation. This year, RIDE conducted 15 Medical Camps throughout Kanchipuram District.

AIDS Awareness Programme

In addition to the Medical Camps, RIDE sponsors programmes throughout the year to raise awareness about AIDS in Tamil Nadu. These programmes include exhibiting educational videos, conducting seminars for health care workers and commercial sex workers, performing dramas, and distributing condoms to high risk groups.

"I think RIDE's AIDS Awareness Programme was its most valuable service to its beneficiaries and community last year." Mrs. Kalai Selvi, organizer, RIDE Day School

Arpakkam Library

RIDE expanded its facilities at the Arpakkam Training Centre this year with the addition of a library. Residents from Arpakkam and the surrounding villages now have access to a variety of reading materials and a quiet place to enjoy them.

Voter Awareness Campaign

voter awareness

Although India is often called the world's largest democracy, too many Indians are without tools necessary to effectively participate in their government. As in years past, RIDE conducted a voter awareness campaign in 1998-99 to combat this political ignorance and apathy. Through posters and public announcements, RIDE urged the residents of Kanchipuram District to exercise their democratic right to vote, to vote early, and to select candidates based on credentials and not along caste or religious lines.
