SPEND 24 HOURS WITH US and get an inside view of India's silk weaving industry. See what is being done to eradicate child labor in the Kanchipuram area. The RIDE Program strikes at the entrenched culture of child labor from many sides, both by providing facilities that ease the transition from workplace to classroom and by training and supporting the families of released child laborers to become economically self sufficient.
Our tour is an in-depth look at the silk weaving/sari making industry and the social changes taking place in the industry today.
THE TOUR INCLUDES:
- An overnight stay in a village with local people, including dinner and breakfast.
- Visit to a village for an up-close look at the cottage silk weaving industry.
- See the weavers at work in their homes. Learn how they become child-free labor operations.
- Visit one of RIDE's 10 BRIDGE SCHOOLS. In these schools newly liberated child laborers are counseled and educated to prepare them for a successful transition to government schools.
- Visit a tribal school, created to serve children not accessible to government schools.
- Tour of a silk weaving factory and a visit to factory silk stores that support child-free labor weaving.
PRICE OF FULL TOUR: Rs 600($13.00)/person and Rs 1,000($21.66)/couple
HALF DAY TOUR AVAILABLE. We can arrange a tour that does not include an overnight stay nor a visit to a factory and silk store for Rs250($5.42).
