Profile 2- Dalai Lama Foundation - wants features while remaining autonomous

Name: Tony Hoeber
Age: 49
Sex: Male
Status: Married
Org Name: Dalai Lama Foundation, 501c3
Location: Bay Area, CA
Purpose of Organization: Working to promote peace, nonviolence, dialogue, etc.
Org Size: 5 full time employees, 4 dedicated volunteers, 12 less committed volunteers
Computer Skills: Have one solid web volunteer. Executive Director formerly in software industry. Organization lacks budget and staff for much tech development.
Free Time: Staff is overworked. Can dedicate 5 hours a week to improving tech advances of site.
Background/Purpose: The Dalai Lama foundation have a lot of good ideas, but do not have the manpower, nor budget, to execute on them. They would like to add a lot of tech features to help them better fulfill their vision.

Agenda:

Things they would like to be empowered with technologically:

  • photo gallery
  • to offer their members more interactive services
  • to offer quote-a-day to their subscribers, with their own header (a service of CF)
  • to generate more interest in their org
  • to put out newsletters

They DO NOT want to lose their identity/online presence/credibility/autonomy by being just a group within Service Space. They want the features to flow seemlessly with their current website.

How did he arrive at Service Space: Word of mouth

ServiceSpace Task Flow:

Task #1: Locate the web site

  • They were on an e-mail list with a link to the newly launched site
  • email/ word of mouth important

Task #2: Learn what the site has to offer

  • Needs to know within ~20 seconds that this site might be useful.
    • Needs a tag line which indicates that it empowers you to do the project of your dreams.
    • They'll be searching right away for what features this new service will empower them with
    • Note that we want the intersection of his goal (looking to add features to his own site) and the 20 second info on the home page to lead him to know he wants to do something with a "Group/Org"

Task #3: Learn about Groups/Orgs

  • They need to be told what a group is, the difference between "an org" (registered nonprofit) and "group", how this will allow them to maintain autonomy while at the same time getting the benefits of being part of the ServiceSpace community, and some simple indication of how to start

Task #4: Explore

We think that Susan will want to explore what more the site has to offer and how it works before actually creating a project. So, she must be able to get an overview of things and look at representative things quickly. This probably needs to be self-driven, and not a marketing demo, for example.

Task #5: Come back and create a group

  • Arch: We demand that there is a Person related to a project when it is created.
    • Being a part of this community, Tony won't mind filling out his profile -- he'll probably be honored to be one of the first.
